In the years following Toto's debut album group struggled to find a successful sound and experienced a series member changes. Eventually, Hungate left the band in 1980 to pursue a solo career in Nashville. His decision was prompted by a lack of time for his family and a rising drug addiction. The band's success ultimately was largely dependent on the talents of Lukather and keyboardist Steve Porcaro.

In 1987, Toto played the Montreux Jazz Festival and continued to tour. At this point the bassist David Hungate left the band to focus on his session and production career. He was replaced by guitarist/vocalist Steve Lukather.
